write it down: when I grow up

As a child what did you want to “be” when you grew up?
When I was a little girl, I really wanted to be an astronaut! It seemed like space and astronauts were everywhere on TV and in the movies. I remember sitting in an elementary school class and watching one of the space shuttle launches live on the small classroom TV. It was such an exciting moment! Possibly the biggest influence on me was seeing commercials for “space camp” in Florida. At space camp you would “train” to become an astronaut and go on simulated “missions.” I begged my parents to let me go, but I was only in 2nd grade! I was so thrilled by the idea of going into space and being weightless. I dreamed of being able to fly, explore a different planet and bounce around. At the same time, the idea of being an astronaut gave me butterflies and anxiety. Whenever I saw the “launch sequence” of a movie or TV show, I was truly terrified! Outer space will always intrigue me, but I have grown out of my astronaut phase. For now I am content to keep my feet firmly planted on this planet!
When I wasn’t dreaming of going into space I also dreamed of being a doctor, teacher, hairdresser like my mom or a lawyer like my dad. I guess I’m still trying to figure out what I’ll be when I “grow up.”

When I was growing up I would hear friends and siblings say they wanted to be a teacher, fireman, pro football player, doctor, dance teacher, and a businessman. All I wanted to be was a mom. IO remember thinking that my response was wrong. I remember at one point getting in a little girly fight with a friend. The fight was all over the fact that the friend said that I needed to be a mom and something else. I have come to find that what my younger self wanted is not reality. How I would like to go back in time and give her a hug and let her know that life will happen and its okay for the plan to change.

I always wanted to be a “singer.”
I would sit in my room and sing in front of the mirror with a microphone in hand, imagining I was as elegant and famous as Celine Dion. I guess to some extent, part of my dream came true! I get paid to sing all the time, which counts as professional, but I’m not exactly the famous celebrity I envisioned I’d be! haha. Luckily, now that I’m “all grown up,” I’m glad I have a normal life!
